The Finance Minister in charge of Investments and Privatization Hon Evelyn Anite has warned procurement officers in various Government Ministries and Agencies against importing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment and services from foreign countries yet Uganda has companies producing the same.
Speaking at the first anniversary of Simi Mobiles, the first Phone Manufacturing company in Uganda, Anite said it is the duty of all Government bodies to implement Presidential Directives on Buy Uganda Build Uganda (BUBU)
“Heads of Government agencies should not be begged all the time to buy locally manufactured products. If you don’t want to buy from Uganda, just leave the office. It’s as simple as that,” she said.
Anite says once the local companies are supported, more Ugandans will get jobs as well increasing Government Revenue.
Speaking at the event, Dr Hatwib Mugasa the Executive Director of NITA Uganda promised more support to Simi Mobile and all other individuals and companies to develop the country’s ICT sector.
He also asked Ugandans to support all local companies engaged in ICT.
Beecham Okware the Board Secretary Engo holdings, the manufacturers of Simi phones, applauded Minister Anite and all Government sectors who have assisted them in starting up this company up to now when they have increased their sales in various parts of Africa and Europe.
“We have been able to sell over 400,000 phones during our period of existence. We are aiming at becoming the African Giant in phone Manufacturing business in few years to come.”
Okware added that they managed to penetrate European markets after sending a batch of their phones to Hungary
Currently the company is employing over 200 Ugandans both skilled and none skilled but promised that they will double the figure in case they commence full production.
