James Onono Ojok, a news reporter at Gulu based Mega FM has been appointed the Assistant Public Relations Officer Gulu University.
An excited Onono, made the announcement on social media, promising to keep practicing journalism for the government owned broadcaster and also contributing for Red Pepper.
“I am glad to take on a new challenge as Gulu University Assistant Public Relations officer,” said Onono.
Adding: “Mega FM (Gulu) and the Pepper publications remain my homes. I am still a news reporter with extended roles,” added Onono.
The investigative reporter started working at Gulu University on Monday this week.
Onono started his career in communication at Choice FM Gulu around 2010 before joining Mega FM and Pepper Publication Limited.
He is expected to boost two other communication officers at the Public Relations Department who don’t speak Luo.
The university reportedly wanted someone proficient in the local dialect with the leverage on engaging the local population.
Besides journalism, Onono has written two poetry books; ‘But My Heart’ and ‘Heaven Will Never Wait’.
In February 2019 President Yoweri Museveni awarded Onono the Golden Jubilee order of the crested crane medal as one of the young persons who have contributed to development and recovery in northern Uganda.
Museveni also awarded 6 other reporters for their contribution in post war northern Uganda and the path to recovery after the Joseph Kony’s destructive civil conflict of two decades.
Gulu University was established by the Parliament Act 7 of 2001. That Act was subsequently amended by Act 3 of 2006. The university admitted its first students and commenced teaching activities in September 2002.
