Mr Fred Mukasa Mbidde has said the leadership of the Democratic Party (DP) in Masaka District does not have powers to suspend him as the district party chairman.
On Saturday, DP party members from parish, Sub County and constituency levels held a meeting in Masaka Town and announced that Mr Mbidde was no longer the district party chairman on claims that has been the cause of chaos in the party as well as selling the party to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
“Effective today February 22, 2020, Mr Fred Mukasa Mbidde is no longer the chairperson of Masaka District DP branch, district delegates who elected him have withdrawn the authority until further notice,” a statement read by Bukoto East MP Florence Namayanja said in part.
But Mr Mbidde, who is also the DP vice president, said the group does not have the powers to suspend him.
“The framers of DP constitution of 1952 forgot to give them such powers. What they did has only propaganda value before those who take the likes of Honourable Namayanja serious, fortunately I am not among those,” he said.
Mr Mbidde also lashed at Ms Namayanja for convening a meeting without the knowledge of the district party executive.
“By the way, Honourable Namayanja is a mere member of the Masaka District branch. As the district branch, once such evidence is collected, we shall sit and execute disciplinary proceedings against her in the interim, she should be comparing notes with Mr Sulaiman Kidandala,” he said.
