The Mbarara District Rewards and Sanctions Committee has expelled 10 teachers over excessive drinking.
These include 8 teachers and two head teachers namely; Robert Kafureka (Rwamanuma P/S), Clesensio Tumwebaze (Rwamanuma P/S), George Mwine (Nyamarebe P/S), Wilfred Abaho (Bwengure P/S), Anna Ahimbisibwe (Rugarura P/S), Naboth Tumushabe (Rwamuhigi P/S), Livingstone Friday (Karamurani P/S), Degratius Mpumwire (Bugarika P/S), Sunday Abert (Bugarika P/S), Emmy Mwesigwa (Rwamanuma P/S).
The committee also ordered the arrest of another teacher over absenteeism and alleged sexual relations with his pupils.
The suspect was identified as Rodgers Tigamugaya a teacher at Karamurani P/S.
Chairman Mbarara district rewards and sanctions committee Alfred Byamukama confirmed the developments during a meeting at Mbarara district council hall on Monday.
In the meeting, a total of 17 teachers were summoned to defend themselves about the committee report on their behaviors.
The teachers were subjected to an alcohol test and 10 tested positive while one was detained for other crimes.
Committee Chairman Byamukama said more such random tests will continue to be conducted to detect and deter habits of absenteeism, alcoholism and abuse of office among teachers and head teachers.
The Mbarara District Education Officer Gabriel Ahimbisibwe in an interview with Chimpreports said he had summoned these teachers a number of times following the reports of excessive drinking.
“We think by punishing these ones severely, the rest will be encouraged to do better. We cannot allow these people to let us down,” he said.
He added that the list of the culpable teachers will be sent to the district service commission for further disciplinary measures.
