Farmers in Mbarara under the Mbarara District Farmers Association (MBADIFA) have castigated Government for not extending services nearer to them.
The farmers were yesterday briefing the press after attending the Jinja Agriculture and Faming Tradeshow where Mbarara was ranked as the best exhibitors.
Basil Bataringaya, a banana farmer from Rubindi Sub County, Kashaari said farmers like him in this are continue to struggle with crops mostly during the dry season.
“The problem is that our place dries quickly and so do the crops,” he said.
“And government has not helped us by for instance supporting an irrigation system.”
The farmers noted that both crops and animals continue to perform badly when rains are scarce and that government hasn’t done enough to help them.
Komunda Laube the manager Rubyerwa Diary Investments said during the show in Jinja, climate change mitigation was heavily emphasized.
At this year’s Agriculture and farming tradeshow that started on 12th July 2019”, Mbarara district was ranked as the best exhibitors and they won a trophy followed by Mukono district and Isingiro district.
Dr. Kasiisi attributed this to proper documentation, use of technology in farming, promotion of value addition and involvement of youths and women in farming,
The Mbarara district LC5 chairman Capt. (RTD) JB Tumusiime Bamuturaki said he was proud of his district’s performance.
“When I went to visit the tradeshow in Jinja last year, I felt jealous after seeing how Isingiro was shining and decided to organize my farmers, support them and they were able to triumph in this year’s tradeshow,” he said.
