Mbarara Resident District Commissioner Maj. Martha Asiimwe yesterday admonished investors in Mbarara Municipality, who were found to be employing refugees in the factories.
The DRC on Monday led a team of officials to inspect all factories in the municipality, as a way of ensuring a good working environment for workers, as well as assessing the performance rate of industries in the municipality in relation to environmental protection.
Some of the plants visited included Nile Breweries in Ruharo, Akandi Tender Touch Enterprises, Lakeside Dairy Top Ltd, Kazire Clinics, and G.B.K Dairies all in Ruti.
The RDC says she was dismayed to find that most of the factories were employing refugees, who they pay peanuts.
“At Akandi for instance, we found that all the employees doing casual labor are refugees from Rwanda. If a worker that that causes harm, it’s not easy to trace him or her,” she noted
The RDC urged government to look into the matter.
She also ordered the arrest of some of the refugees at the plant who were taken to Immigration offices for further investigations.
Meanwhile, the RDC cautioned the factories against emptying their waste into River Rwizi.
“These residues sometimes contain chemicals which are dangerous to our lives” she said
“River Rwizi is our only source of water in Mbarara and we all need it,” said the RDC
Other members on the monitoring team included; Francis Bemanya the deputy Mayor Mbarara Municipality Council, DISO Robert Nabimanya, Richard Mugisha the deputy town clerk, councilors, environmentalist and technical staff Mbarara Municipal Council.
