The acting District Police Commander Mbarara district Isaac Kambugu almost died on duty on Friday while hunting for suspects who killed a police constable (Vincent Byaruhanga) in the same district.
The suspected that is being hunted fled with the deceased’s gun.
According to Mbarara RDC Capt. Martha Asiimwe, after police gathering information that he could be hiding in areas of Kakiika division in Mbarara municipality, they mounted a search in the area.
But as they drove towards the suspect area, they landed into a volley of bullets.
The person in hiding fired at the police van in which the DPC was also travelling, Asiimwe said.
Nobody was injured during the exchange, she added.
Asiimwe told our reporter that the incident happened at an area between Tuwereza Bakery and Daystar Cathedral church in Kakiika.
Rwizi Police spokesman Samson Kasasira was contacted for a comment, and he promised to get back but at the time of publishing the story, he hadn’t given feedback.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura yesterday told police officers, while commenting on the death of Byaruhanga — to avoid walking alone with guns as criminals have started targeting police stations and police personnel.
“These days police is being targeted and I have issued directives to arrest every policeman who will be walking alone with guns. You must not walk alone whether going or coming from deployment,” said Kayihura.
He said police has lost many of its personnel and they are putting up serious measures to ensure that policemen are driven to and from their duties.
