Mbarara: Armed Assailants Kill Businessman

Police in Mbarara are hunting for armed people who shot and killed a 38 year old businessman in Katooma village, Kagongi Sub-county on Monday evening.

The attackers, still unknown are said to have attacked and shot dead Gideon Natukunda in the chest and later used a machete to cut him on the head.

The Rwizi regional police spokesperson Samson Kasasira said police visited the scene and the body was taken to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital mortuary.

The deceased was a renowned businessman dealing in different merchandise at Katooma trading centre.

Kasasira says after the murder, the assailants disappeared in the Buhweju hills and didn’t take anything from the deceased.

 The police mouthpiece says these kinds of murders have become persistent in the area.

He added that Mbarara police are working closely with authorities in Buhweju to ensure that the culprits are brought to book.

In a related development, Police in Mbarara are also holding a 30 year old woman who together with her children are believed to have murdered her husband and buried his body in their house before setting it alight.

Melon Kyomukama, a resident of Bunusya cell in Kakiika division, Mbarara Municipality was arrested on Monday while trying to escape on hearing that police was hunting for her.

The deceased was identified as Simon Katungi Kanini, who went missing about two months ago.

Fearing trouble, the suspect, her daughter Charity Atusimire and son Dickson Bemanya went into hiding.

On Monday police visited their house and managed to retrieve the remains of the deceased.

The wife was arrested from Mbarara town at a friend’s place where she was hiding, while the children are still at large.

According to preliminary reports, the three killed the family head and buried him inside the house before setting it on fire to conceal evidence.

One family member told Chimpreports that the deceased had in the past complained of being harassed by the wife whom she accused of being reckless and messing up with other men.

The area LC 3 chairperson Gumisiriza Kyabwisho said they received reports that the family members used to beat up the deceased and would use chains to keep him tied in his home.

The chains were also discovered at the crime scene where his remains were found.

The Rwizi region police spokesperson said the suspect is being held at Mbarara central police station as the children are still on run.
