Mbarara: 2 Held for Stealing Babies

Police in Mbarara are holding 2 women alleged to have been stealing children in and around Mbarara town.

The OC CID Mbarara Taban Chiriga says Annet Natukunda and Flavia Karanzi stole toddlers, sildenafil one from Mbarara Referral Hospital and another from Daystar Cathedral where the mother had gone for night prayers, on Monday October 17th.

A care taker at the referral hospital Puriceda Twongirwe reported to police yesterday about a missing baby who had just been delivered.

Taban says after a short investigation, two women who include Flavia Karanzi a teacher at Rugando Technical in Rwampara were arrested. Her unnamed husband police says is also a suspect in the matter.

The police boss says Christine Tukamushaba, another mother at Day Star Church reported to her pastor and police about her baby who went missing while she had taken her for prayers to be relieved of a malaria fever. The arrested suspect in this case is Annet Natukunda a resident of Kahirindi, Rwekubo in Isingiro district.

Taban said the mother had gone to take a bath and wash her clothes and on return she found the lady with whom she had left her baby, gone.

The OCCID says Natukunda’s husband in Mubende district was helpful in pinning his wife as the thief.

Annet was interrogated and she confirmed that she had a miscarriage and thought of stealing a baby to avoid a row with her husband.

Taban said the suspects will be charged with aggravated trafficking in persons under case number CRB 2697/2016 after investigations.
