Mbabazi Misses NRM Kyankwanzi Meeting

Former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi did not attend the opening ceremony of the NRM annual retreat at National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi.

Mbabazi fell out of favour with the system when president Museveni’s strategists suspected that the former was eyeing the presidency in 2016.

This kicked off a series of eyebrow-raising developments within the ruling party, with Mbabazi being sacked as Prime Minister and later toppled from the powerful position of Secretary General.

During last year’s Kyankwanzi retreat, members proposed and endorsed the sole candidacy of president Museveni in 2016 elections.

Mbabazi first refused to sign the resolution until he was told that the move was aimed at consolidating internal cohesion.

He would later say the resolution was an expression of feelings.

Mbabazi headed the External Wing of the NRA guerrilla group that rose to power in 1986. Since then, he has held high ranking positions in the government.

In his address at the opening of the retreat yesterday, Museveni tackled three areas of value addition that will stimulate and accelerate the process of social and economic transformation in Uganda.

Held under the theme, “Fast Tracking the NRM Manifesto. Our Commitment to Service delivery, job creation and wealth creation,” the retreat is running from February 7 to 15.
