• Uganda Cubs 3-0 Ethiopia
Uganda Cubs advanced to the semi-finals of the U-17 CECAFA Championship after a 3-0 victory against Ethiopia on Friday at Umuganda stadium in Rwanda.
Again striker Oscar Mawa shinned with a brace as Ivan Irinimbabazi netted the other goal in the game played under a heavy downpour.
Uganda Cubs took the lead through target man Mawa who met a loose ball off Ethiopia’s goalkeeper Nurye Tesfamaryam for the opener inside the opening 16 minutes.
Travis Mutyaba was brought down at the edge of the box by Nagash Miraj before skipper Ibrahim Juma stepped up to take the freekick and goalkeeper Nurye Tesfamaryam spilled the ball in the path of Mawa who headed Uganda in front.
In the 35th minute, Ivan Irinimbabazi doubled the lead for Uganda Cubs through a low drive shot from outside the area after Tesfamaryam again punched the ball in his path.
28 minutes later, Mawa stretched Uganda Cubs’ lead to three when he rounded off erratic goalkeeper Tesfamaryam to slot home his second thanks to a Fahad Jumbe assist.
Uganda would have scored more but an attempt from Hassan Mubiru was dealt with by goalkeeper while Tenywa Juma and Travis Mutyaba’s efforts were cleared off the line.
Uganda will take on Djibouti in the semifinal and the winner will storm the final and directly qualify for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament due to be hosted by Morocco.
