Police in Masindi District are investigating circumstances under which a 31-year old man was murdered and his father kidnapped over a mercury deal.
It is alleged a one Joab Kyalisima claimed he had brought mercury from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and urgently needed buyers.
According to police, Kyalisima was on December 27 approached by two men who posed as potential buyers before tricking him to enter a room so the mercury could be tested.
The strangers used this opportunity to beat up Kyalisima. His lifeless body was later discovered in a maize plantation on Saturday.
The shocking incident occurred in Kituka Central Village, Kihaguzi Parish in Pakanyi sub-county, Masindi district.
As if this was not scary enough, the suspected killers returned to the village and kidnapped the deceased’s father Yonasan Kajura, 50.
The kidnappers have since asked for Shs 5m to release the captive; a huge amount of money the family can hardly raise.
Addressing residents at the scene of crime, area police commander, Bosco Odongo promised to “get to the bottom of the matter” with the view of apprehending the suspects to face the full wrath of the law.”
“Our intelligence organs have already started tracking the phones used by the suspects. The people need to help us with information to facilitate this investigation. We will find them,” he said.
The deceased’s body was taken by police to Masindi General Hospital for postmortem.
