The President General of the Democratic Party (DP), Mr Norbert Mao, has described as comedy the election of new members of the party’s National Executive Committee.
Last Friday, members of the National Council elected new leaders to fill the vacancies in the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC). Those elected to NEC are Medard Lubega Segona (secretary general), Matia Lwanga Bwanika (national chairman), Babirye Mary Kabanda (National Treasurer), Patrick Katuramu (deputy treasurer); Kagoye Racheal (deputy women leader) and Kiwanuka Alex (representative of Busoga region).
But Mr Mao, in an interview on Monday, March 16, 2020, said the election was illegitimate.
“Their meeting had no proper convener or Chair and was not called under the constitution. National Council is called by the Secretary General and chaired by the National Chairman. Convening such a meeting by any Tom Dick and Harry [is against the party constitution],” he said.
“We don’t have time to respond to comedians. We’re very busy preparing the National Delegates Conference in Gulu which will elect new leaders,” Mr Mao added.
But DP legal advisor Samuel Muyizzi said the elections were held in line in what the party National Council (NC) resolved on December 16, 2019. In December, NC directed NEC to draw a roadmap that would lead to the National Delegates conference.
“President Mao was present in the NC and NEC where dates for each activity were decided. He is aware of all the processes,” Mr Muyizzi said.
