Police in Kanungu district are investigating a murder case in which a village chairman was killed by a resident on Sunday night.
According to the area police, the deceased has been identified as Mwesigwa Moses Kigongo, aged 32 years old and chairman of Ruhija Cell, Muramba Parish, Rutenga Sub-county in Kanungu district.
Police in a statement said that the suspect identified as Twesigomwe Wilberforce of the same address assaulted his wife badly and chairman (now late) together with others who rushed to the scene to take her to the hospital.
“They had a hammock to carry her and while the chairman was organising it, Twesigomwe emerged with a hoe and hit him on the head.” reads the police statement.
The deceased died instantly and Twesigomwe vanished abandoning the hoe at the scene of crime.
He then went on a rampage and grabbed a panga which he used to cut his sister and another person identified as Akampurira Nelson.
However, a mob followed him and got him at Omumbuga Cell Southern Ward, Kanungu town council, and beat him before Police arrived.
He was later taken to Kanungu Health Centre IV where he is admitted.
Police later visited the scene of the crime, did postmortem and the body has been handed over to the relatives for burial.
