Man Charged, Remanded Over Attempted Theft Of Gun From Police Officer

A court in Gulu has charged a 23-year-old man for attempting to steal a gun from a police officer on duty.

Grade One Magistrate Christine Turibanawe charged Martin Alal with trying to snatch a gun from Busiima Edema, a police constable, who was deployed to guard the Offices of the Auditor General along Airfield road in Gulu town.

Prosecution led by Paul Wepondi told court that on 17th October , 2018, at around 5:00 am from the offices of Auditor General, the suspect fought with a police officer on duty with intention to rob his gun.

Alal is also alleged to have used a stone to hit the forehead of Edema.

The fight between Edema and the suspect lasted for between 15- 20 minutes.

Edema was saved by Sgt Moses Okello who responded to the alarms he was making.

The suspect was later arrested and taken to Gulu Central Police Station before being charged with attempted robbery.

Alal however denied any knowledge of the charges telling the court that on the fateful day, he was not even near the scene of crime.


The matter has been adjourned to November 29, 2018 for furthering hearing of the case after two prosecution witnesses, all police officers including Edema who is the complainant in the case.
