Makindye, one of the four divisions making up the Kampala District has strengthened its efforts in the prevention of COVID-19.
The Division team led by Bosco Lusagala, the Deputy Mayor on Thursday kicked off with an exercise of delivering hand washing equipment and other essentials to its residents.
The exercise started from Kibuye Ward, aiming at covering over 4000 households.
Flagging off the distribution team at the Division headquarters, Lusagala applauded CIDI together with Caritas Denmark for thinking about them to the extent of donating them over 40 handwashing equipment 8000 bars of soap and face masks which they are going to distribute in slums and busy areas.
“This equipment will not only help us in preventing COVID-19 but it will also facilitate the eradication of other sanitation-related diseases like cholera and dysentery from the slums,” Lusagala said.
Kiyimba Muzafaru, Makindye Division speaker said that through such initiatives, their division is going to lead all others in the promotion of good sanitation and hygiene.
Hellen Nakawooya Kasujja the Deputy Executive Director CIDI asked all people who have received the tanks to maintain them properly so that they can be able to last longer as planned.
“During this period of lockdown, people have been struggling for survival with much emphasis on food and they have been constrained to cater for other essential needs like soap,” said Nakawooya.
Evelyn Zalwango, project coordinator for CIDI in charge of COVID-19 prevention pointed out that although they have not been able to cover the whole division, the little items given out will create a greater impact on the beneficiaries.
“Many people in this community have been and are willing to practice COVID-19 preventive measures of washing hands but they can’t afford to buy soap and other essentials.”
