Makerere set to award Justice Stephen Egonda-Ntende an Honorary Doctorate of Law

Makerere University Council has approved to award an honorary doctorate (PhD) to Justice Frederick Martin Stephen Egonda-Ntende at its forthcoming 74th graduation ceremony.

Makerere Senate (academic board) made a recommendation to University Council to award Justice Egonda-Ntende an Honorary Doctor of Laws (LL.D) degree of Makerere University. The Council has approved the request.

Council notes that he has made profound impact on the legal training and practice, made professional achievements and significant contributions to the legal fraternity in Uganda and elsewhere, and exhibited an extremely high degree of integrity and dedication to service in the cause of justice.

Justice Egonda-Ntende is said to have carried out his task as a judge with humility, utmost incorruptibility and unwavering fealty to the cause of justice and equality embedded in the judicial oath and demonstrated exceptional accomplishments in upholding ethical principles and the development of the judicial system in Uganda and globally.

It is on the above grounds that the Makerere University Council has found it worthy to award Justice Egonda-Ntende the Honorary Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, (L.L.D) of Makerere University.

Justice Egonda-Ntende has been invited to be part of Makerere University’s 74th graduation ceremony, where the degree will be conferred upon him on Monday, January 29, 2024. The ceremony will be held at Makerere University’s Freedom Square.

According to the university policy, the award of Honorary Degrees must be awarded in his presence, except in exceptional circumstances, as maybe approved by the University Council.

The honorary degree is the highest award granted by the University and constitutes recognition of distinctive achievement that has added materially to knowledge and to the betterment of society.
