Makerere Professor Accused of Rape Released

Professor Bakuneta in court today

High Court Judge Jane Francis Abodo has released Makerere University Professor Christopher Bakuneta who has been facing rape charges.

The release followed a Nolle Prosequi dated 30th November 2018, which was presented in court by state Prosecutor Catherine Namakoye stating the Director of Public Prosecution has lost interest in the matter

“The DPP has discontinued the charges against the accused because we have failed to secure attendance of the victim who is the key witness whom we have summoned on several occasions” Namakoye said.

Namakoye added that earlier on, the victim wrote to the DPP informing him that she is no longer interested in this matter

The judge however, before setting the suspect free, informed him that Prosecution still has powers to bring back the same charges against him once they get enough evidence.

On the issue of bail fees refund Bakuneta was advised to apply to the Registrar of High Court who will track his record of attendance to court and that once it’s good he will be given back all the money he paid as part of bail conditions.

Bakuneta is a  lecturer in the college of natural sciences  who  came to limelight in 2016 on accusations that he allegedly raped a 22 years old Ntegeka Versha a student at the University.
