Somalia war star, Maj Gen Paul Lokech, has been appointed UPDF Chief of Staff Airforce.

Lokech, who is considered one of the country’s finest battlefield commanders, replaces Maj Gen James Birungi who was recently named Special Forces commander.

Lokech played a key role in defeating Al Shabaab insurgents in Somalia where he led several UPDF contingents.

Brig Bob Ogik will serve as Deputy Commandant of the Senior Command Staff facility at Kimaka, Jinja.

According to Thursday’s promotions announced by Defence Spokesperson Brigadier Richard Karemire, Brig Winston Byaruhanga has been appointed as Commandant Junior Staff College- Jinja.

Brig Peter Omolla, the former commander of the Mountain Brigade and East Africa Standby Force, takes over as Commandant Uganda Rapid Deployment Capability Centre.

In 2018, Omolla led battle group XVI in Somalia. He had previously served in the war-torn country.

The deployments were possibly aimed at replacing vacant positions left by transferred senior army officers.

“The UPDF fraternity congratulates the following General Officers upon their elevation to higher positions of responsibility,” said Karemire.
