The South Sudan rebel leader, Dr. Riek Machar on Wednesday held a discussion with the United Nation’s Under Secretary-General on Sexual Violence and Special Representative of the Secretary General, Mrs. Pramila Patten.
According to a statement from the armed opposition SPLA in opposition, the meeting, which took place in Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa centered on peace and sexual violence.
“The meeting between the SPLM-IO Chairman and Commander in Chief of the SPLA (IO), H.E Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon (PhD), his accompanying delegation and the UN Under-Secretary General was cordial and fruitful, it centered on the issues of peace and sexual violence in the region,” said the statement.
The opposition chief also appealed to the UN boss to support the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (RARCSS).
“Meanwhile H.E Machar urged Mrs. Pramila Patten to support peace implementation to stop suffering of the people of South Sudan,” added the statement.
The implementation of (RARCSS) has however been delayed for several months over disagreements on the unification of forces.
Both government and the opposition forces have been accused of committing grave human atrocities, including sexual violence, by the UN and other humanitarian agencies.
Machar left Sudan capital Khartoum for the meeting on Sunday at the invitation of the UN Under-Secretary General.
