Machar, Gen. Hemedti Arrive in Juba for Talks with Kiir

South Sudan opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar arrived in Capital Juba on Monday with Sudanese Sovereign Council Vice President, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

The duo and their delegations were received at Juba International Airport by South Sudan Presidential Security Affairs Advisor, Tut Gatluak Manemi, who is also Chairman of the Mediation Committee of Government of South Sudan for Peace in Sudan.

Machar and his delegation of 68 people including 9 generals and 2 Members of Parliament are expected to discuss with President Salva Kiir and his team the contentious security arrangement which has delayed the implementation of the second peace agreement signed in September 2018 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The evacuation of frontline forces to cantonment centers and integration as stipulated by the agreement has proved to be challenging.

Fighting is still happening in some areas though minimally.

Machar’s arrival in Juba is meant to quicken the formation of second unity government in which the rebel chief is going to serve as First Vice President, a position he held before the collapse of the first unity government in July 2016.

The first unity government formed in April 2016 collapsed in 3 months after a fierce gunfight inside the presidential palace between the bodyguards of Kiir and Machar. The fighting killed over 300 elite force from both sides including Machar’s son.

Meanwhile Gen. Daglo Hemedti, according to Sudan News Agency, is also going to engage Kiir in a number of bilateral issues.

“General Mohammed Daglo will discuss with President Salva Kiir Mayardit a number of issues of common interest, especially peace in Sudan and South Sudan,” said the agency.
