Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, the chief Government Whip revealed that the ruling National Resistance Movement, or NRM, would Sunday launch a campaign to extend the presidential term in office from 5 to 7 years.
The referendum campaign has been dubbed ‘M7 Non Stop’; originating from the last name of President Yoweri Museveni, who is the immediate beneficiary.
The development follows the unprecedented passing of the age limit law, which gave President Museveni an opportunity to contest for two more terms – a success they are celebrating with a huge party at Sazza grounds in Kiboga district today Sunday.
President Museveni is the guest of honor.
Nankabirwa, who is also the district woman MP of the host district, said that the campaign will be aimed at urging people to vote for the extension of the term of the president, in an upcoming referendum that will be organized by the electoral commission.
“We shall do it through a referendum, we shall start talking about a referendum which was passed by cabinet and the EC should organise for the elections soon,” Nankabirwa said.
“We shall explain what we passed and what is remaining is doing everything possible to align the organs of government with the 7 year term as it was passed for the Member of Parliament. We shall be going to constituencies to seek the mandate of the electorates for the need of the referendum.”
Asked on whether the MPs did to extend their mandate from 5 to 7 years was representative of the voters, Nankabirwa said, “What MPs did was in their mandate for the extension of their term.”
