A man who had gone to join the Local Defence Unit (LDU), died Friday after a kilometer run, Chimp Corps report.
The run is a mandatory physical fitness test all recruits have to undertake.
Ronald Obonyo reportedly collapsed and died moments after completing the grueling fitness test at Apac Boma Ground in Apac Municipality.
Obonyo was a resident of Bung ‘B’ village in Akot Parish, Aduku Sub-county.
Contacted, Defence Spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire confirmed the development, saying Obonyo was among potential recruits who were selected for the initial physical fitness test.
“After running for 10 kilometres, he returned with the rest of the recruits to the recruitment centre but he suddenly collapsed and died without saying anything,” said Karemire.
According to the postmortem report, the cause of Obonyo’s death is “hypoxia (deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues) at the buccal cavity membrane.”
Hundreds have been turning up for LDU recruitment which is aimed at showering up the country’s defence forces amid increased crime and external security threats,
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family of late Ronald Obonyo upon this sudden loss,” said Karemire.
“We salute him for the zeal to participate in the noble and patriotic duty of securing the country.”
Obonyo is the first person to die in the LDU fitness test.
