Lawyers representing Lt. Gen Henry Tumukunde have petitioned Nakawa Magistrates court seeking for his unconditional release together with 13 others.
In an application filed by Turyamusiima Geoffrey from Wameli and Company Advocates, the lawyers accused Police of holding their clients beyond the mandatory 48 hours without being produced in court
The listed detainees include among others Gen Tumukunde, Hon Annet Nyakecho, Otim Levy, Ebong Walter, Alere Walter Raymond, Okello Dennis, Manyala John, Kiiza Arthur, Ocoko Joyce, Akello Rhoda and Antimango Nancy.
The respondents in the matter include The Attorney General, Commandant in Charge of Special Investigations Directorate (SID) as well as Officers in Charge of both Jinja Road and Kira Road Police stations and Director CIID.
“The applicants who are currently held at Jinja Road, Kira Road Police Station, and Special Investigation Directorate (SID) or any other facility be released from Police custody forth with or charged before court of law,” they demanded.
This application was accompanied by an affidavit sworn by counsel Turyamusiima in which he says that the detention of his clients for more than 48 hours without being brought to court is illegal and unlawful.
Last week army and Police raided Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde’s offices and arrested him with several others who are currently facing treason charges .
