Lawrence Mahatlane Officially Unveiled as Cricket Cranes Coach Months After Appointment

Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) has officially unveiled South African Lawrence Mahatlane as the Cricket Cranes coach for the next three years.

Mahatlane was earlier confirmed for the position on 27 June but could not come to Uganda to start his duties due to the Covid-19 pandemic that caused travel restrictions.

The 44 year old who replaces Kenyan Steve Tikolo, on Thursday told journalists at Kati Kati restaurant in Lugogo that he was moved by the team’s goals and passion.

“It has been an interesting journey, this process started in January and the offer was very persuasive. The passion made me sign on the dotted lines and I am very excited by the new challenge ahead,” Mahatlane told the press during his unveiling.

He added, “the target of ODI Status by 2020 is very realistic, but it’s not only the vision, I want also the ladies to do well, I want to make sure that Cricket is an elite sport in Uganda and I want to see how every kid will access the game. If we can’t dream, we cannot have a vision, hopefully I will be part of the dream.”

Mahatlane will work alongside Jackson Ogwang as his assistant coach and will immediately start preparations for the T20 Invitational Tour scheduled for December in Qatar.
