Forum for Democratic Change’s (FDC) Presidential Candidate, Patrick Oboi Amuriat has told residents of Kyankwanzi that their district should be doing better that its current state.
Addressing a rally in Kyamulalama trading center, Gayaza Sub County on Friday, Amuriat took aim at President Yoweri Museveni for surrendering the area to fate and yet its people paid a huge price in the five-year struggle that propelled the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to power.
“Here where Museveni waged a war would not be looking like the Kyankwanzi of today. This should be the Mecca of Mr. Museveni; lives should have been transformed…not this life of selling your produce at a very low price,” he said.
The situation, Amuriat said would have been a little bit better had the current Government not collapsed West Mengo and Wamala Union Cooperative Societies among many others.
He promised to resuscitate cooperative societies and increase Government funding towards the agricultural sector.
“The first thing we will do is to increase the budget of agriculture from 3% that it stands today to 10% of the budget so that the people of Kyankwanzi can open some bigger pieces of land,” he elaborated.
At a special ordinary assembly held in the Mozambican capital of Maputo on July 2003, African heads of state unilaterally agreed to allocate at least 10% of their budgetary resources towards agriculture and rural development.
However according to official documents; Uganda’s contribution slackened from 1.5 trillion shillings in FY 2019/2020 to 1.3 trillion the next year.
Besides that, Amuriat also pledged to set up an agricultural bank which then would enable farmers to access cheap credit and build silos to cap price fluctuation occasioned by bumper harvests.
