Kyambogo University Donates Locally Made Light Weight Face Shields to Health Workers

The Ministry of Health has received a donation of locally made face shields from a team of biomedical engineers from Kyambogo University meant to protect health workers from contracting COVID-19.

It should be recalled that the Health Minister, Dr Ruth Ruth Aceng recently confirmed that a total of 530 health workers have so far contracted Covid-19 and 6 have succumbed to it, in her last address.

Upon receiving the donation, the Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Diana Atwine confirmed that the biomedical engineers, through Silver Bolt donated the face shields and this was intended to support Uganda’s COVID-19 response.

“The production of these face shields was funded by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE),  Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology (SIGHT) and fabricated by Silver Bolt,” Dr. Atwine said.

According to Silver Bolt, the donation was an effort to contribute to the national efforts in the Covid-19 response. The light weight face shields will be given to frontline health workers as a public and personal health control measure against the spread of COVID-19.

“We applaud them for the use of technology to enhance local production. This fits into our national vision of increasing our GDP thus economic and social development,” Atwine added.
