Security in Kisoro district on Wednesday carried out an operation where 76 people were arrested in Kisoro town.
The arrested included 11 women and a village council chairman of Chintale cell in Nyamagana Ward, Kisoro Municipality, one Julius Hashakimaana, who was found drunk and sleeping in one of the bars at around 9:45 am.
Charles Okoto, the Kisoro district police commander says the operation was conducted in the areas of Nadege, Russia and Miranda.
He said all the arrested were found in bars and gambling places.
Okoto says that the aim of the operation was to curb criminality which tends to soar during the festive season due to the fast flow of cash.
He said the operation will go on through January next year.
The operation came days after assailants attacked the residence of Rev Canon Habimana Baker, the former Muhabura Diocesan secretary and slaughtered two of his workers.
Kisoro Municipality, which is near Rwanda and war torn Democratic Republic of Congo has a high influx of refugees, and illegal immigrants, which authorities say exacerbates the crime rate.
