The family of a 45 year old businesswoman in Kisoro yesterday paid Shs 20million to secure her freedom from unknown kidnappers.
Zainab Mahoro, a resident of Mikingo in Kisoro Municipality was released on Monday, having been taken hostage by the criminals on the same day.
Mahoro was kidnapped in Ntungamo district as she disembarked from a Kisoro – Kampala bus.
She says she tried to shout for help but the men shook off rescuers, telling them that she was a mentally challenged relative of theirs and that they were taking her to hospital.
Later she says, they blindfolded her and drove her in a Toyota Ipsum to an unknown destination.
The kidnappers later telephoned Mahoro’s husband Isa Kwizera asking for Shs 100 million to release her. Kwizera however, told them he could only manage 20million.
The husband says he contacted his friend Justus from Mbarara who coordinated and managed to raise Shs 17 million, while he found 3 million to make 20 million.
Justus was told to deliver the money to an agreed place and to come alone driving himself.
He says after handing them the money, and after they verified it, they drove off with Mahoro, and later dumped her in a forest in Kazo, Kiruhura, warning her not to remove her blindfold until they had completely disappeared.
The husband Kwizera, who had reported a kidnap case at Kisoro Police, couldn’t hold back tears seeing his wife back home.
Kwizera believes the kidnappers, from the phone conversations he had with them, were connected to the people he is fighting with in court with over land.
He says he had in the past received letters from unknown persons warning him to back off the district land.
