At least one person has now been confirmed dead from the car crash that happened last evening at the Kamwonkya traffic lights.
The accident involved a truck registration number UAA 497L which ploughed into several vehicles that were held at the lights near Kira Road Police Station.
The truck, which was carrying tiles, is said to have failed to brake.
The person who succumbed to injuries from the accident has been identified as 25-year-old Phillipa Musimenta.
A resident of Kira Town Council, Ms Musimenta was one of the passengers in the commuter taxi that was hit first by the speeding truck.
Relatives of the deceased tell us she was heading to Kampala.
“She died from Mulago Hospital where she was rushed,” one the relatives told us Thursday.
Musimenta, who is a recent graduate of Ndejje University will be laid to rest tomorrow Friday at her ancestral home in Kiruhura district.
Meanwhile, police have since informed us that another unnamed person, a bodaboda cyclist, that was initially reported dead from the accident, is still alive and battling severe injuries at the national referral hospital.
A total of 29 people sustained varying injuries from the crash.
Earlier this morning, police announced the arrest of the man suspected to have been the driver of the ill-fated truck.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire said the suspect in custody was arrested as he tried to flee the scene of crime.
The police publicist however did not give details of the suspect saying that the case is still under investigation.
Mr Owoyesigire also said that Kampala traffic police is going to step up a crackdown on all trucks in mechanically dangerous conditions to deter the same from happening again.
