Uganda’s long distance runners Phillip Kiplimo and Doreen Chemutai starred with gold medals in the one-day NBC Tanzania Marathon that happened on Sunday.
Kiplimo triumphed in the Men’s marathon (42.2km) after posting a time of 2:17:26 to edge competition from Tanzania’s Hamis Misai (2:17:35) and Kenyan Stanley Kipchirchir (2:19:13).
Marathon winner Kiplimo returns home with three million five hundred thousand Tanzanian shillings (Tshs 3.5M) as prize money while the first and second runners-up bagged 2.5M and 1.5M respectively.
Elsewhere, Doreen Chemutai triumphed in the Women’s half marathon (21.1km) with a timing of 1:13:45 followed by Kenyan Judith Cherono Cherono (1:14.39).
The victorious Chemutai received Tshs 2.5m while Kenyan Cherono walked away with Tshs 1.5m.
Kenyan Shelmith Nyawira won the Women’s marathon while Gabriel Geay (Tanzania) was victorious in the Men’s Half Marathon where Uganda’s Julius Ochieng came sixth.
The marathon was geared towards raising money for fighting cervical cancer in Tanzania at Dar es Salaam Ocean Road Center.
