Mugabe Robert, a businessman who was kidnapped by gunmen on August 3rd, 2018 in Queen Elizabeth National Park has been released after family members paid a $7,500 ransom.
Mugabe (38), a resident of Busoni village, in Nabiswera Sub County in Nakasongola district, together with three other colleagues Patrick Bukora, Nassolo Sauda, and Julius Saturday, were waylaid by gunmen near the Southern Gate Army Barracks in Kanungu district.
These were travelling in an Isuzu Canter registration number UAB 196J, which was transporting fish from Kasese district to Ishasha in Kanungu district.
The victims according to area police spokesperson Elly Maate were intercepted by a group of armed men, dressed in clothes akin to the uniforms of the Democratic Republic of Congo National Army, who emerged from the national park and started shooting randomly.
Maate says the three were shot in the legs while Mugabe was kidnapped. The gunmen later called one of the victims using Magabi’s telephone number, and demanded a 20,000 US Dollars ransom for his release.
Maate now confirms that Mugabe was escorted by the assailants up to the Ishasha border, untied and released yesterday morning after the victim’s relatives and friends contributed and wired the money through Mobile Money.
He says the victim, who has been kidnapped in a forest in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo was fed on posho and beans through the ordeal.
He adds that the kidnappers spoke Rukiga- Runyankole and some Kiswahili while bargaining the ransom with family members from USD 20,000 to USD 7500.
He also says that the gunmen completely destroyed Mugabe’s telephone immediately after the money was withdrawn.
Mugabe was still held at Kihihi police station helping police to trace the gunmen.
