KCCA Knocked Out Of CAF Champions League, Dumped In Confederations Cup

KCCA FC’s dreams of making it to the group stage of the 2019/2020 CAF Champions League were shuttered after failing to pick a win against Angolan outfits Petro de Luanda.

The two sides settled for a one-all stalemate in the final preliminary round game played at Startimes Stadium, Lugogo on Friday evening.

As a result, the Kasasiro Boys were dumped into the CAF Confederations Cup where they will have to play one more qualification round before making it to the group stages.

The Mike Mutebi’s charges needed a win of any magnitude on the day to advance to the group stages of the CAF Champions League after picking up a goalless draw in Luanda a fortnight ago but they were unable to overcome the Angolan giants.

The Uganda Premier League Champions searched for an early goal and it was Gift Ali who had the team’s best chance under five minutes but his fierce shot was stopped by Petro’s custodian Delgado.

Kizza then delivered a beautiful free-kick on the 12-minute mark but there was no one to get at the end of his delivery, Okello then shot from range but his effort was comfortably collected by Petro’s Delgado.

Defender Kato was then called into action to deny Jorge Mendes from close range and right back Obenchan recurrently denied Petro’s full-back Carneiro access up field.

On 34 minutes, Charles Lukwago fouled Isaac Mensah in the box and Petro were given a penalty. Captain Ricardo Estevao stepped up and slotted home to give the visitors the lead.

After recess, Sadat Anaku and Simon Serunkuma were introduced for Herbert Achai and Nunda Jackson to pick something positive out of the game.

Petro’s Daniel Santonho was cautioned for a dangerous foul on Allan Okello in the 56th minute.

A minute later, Kizza Mustafa drew the tie level with a smart tap in from close range off a ball from substitute Sadat Anaku before he delivered a thunderous free-kick straight into keeper Jorge Delgado’s hands.

KCCA FC was then twice denied clear penalties when Petro’s Tangu Gastao and Wilson Pinto handled the ball in the penalty box but the referee waved play on.
