KCCA Impounds Taxis around City Center over Violation of New Traffic Guidelines

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has on Tuesday carried out a joint operation with Police in the central business district-Kampala where it has impounded several taxis on top of arresting their drivers.

Most of the taxi operators have been arrested along Burton Street for loading passengers within ungazetted areas. Others were intercepted at Yamaha center as they were heading towards Mutaasa Kafeero.

Although most of these had all the necessary requirements, they were arrested for blocking city roads.

One of the affected drivers Ali Bogere from Lugazi stage expressed concern on why they were being arrested after fulfilling all the requirements.

“We were operating from the Old Taxi Park but it is currently under renovation. Why are we being arrested when our route charts indicate that we have to operate from Burton Street?” asked Bogere.

Efforts to reach Kampala Capital City Authority have been futile, the inline officials declined to pick our calls.

This has come a few hours after the expiry of the three day waiver period in which taxis were allowed to transport stranded passengers to upcountry areas before undergoing the registration process.
