The battle for NRM Woman Member of Parliament (MP) in Kazo District, continues to rage with one of the contestants declaring early victory and warning Molly Kamukama of consequences if she rigs results of Friday’s NRM primaries.
“I however want to sound a warning bell to my senior colleague in the race, Molly Kamukama, not to be tempted to steal the peoples’ choice,” warned Ronah K. Ruranga on Saturday night.
“To do so will be very, very, very costly to her and whoever else will be a subject of the peoples’ anger,” she emphasised.
Kazo was one the districts that saw severe violence in the election exercise yesterday.
According to the NRM deputy spokesperson Ofwono Opondo, a group of unknown people last night ransacked the tally centre and left with the results after destroying some.
However, Economic Monitoring Minister Kamukama announced on social media this morning that despite the attack, she was still in the lead.
“Despite an attack on the tally centre by one of my opponents and hired goons, I wish to inform all my supporters that I am firmly in the lead to win the (NRM) flag bearer position for Kazo Women MP. I urge you keep calm and await official communication,” she said
“The declaration Forms in my possession put us in a comfortable lead and we are only awaiting official communication from the NRM electoral commission. Thank you all for the kind support.”
Kamukama did not share the preliminary results which she said put her in the lead.
Nevertheless, Ruranga warned that Kazo will not look on idly if the results are falsified.
“If by Monday, midday, next week, we shall not have heard from the NRM DEO, and obtained our results in a transparent and unaltered manner, Molly will only have herself to blame,” threatened Ruranga.
Below is Ruranga’s statement in full.
To you all, the people of Kazo District and to you all, the National Resistance Movement(NRM) fraternity, I greet you.
Permit me to say thank you for your overwhelming support to me, in particular, and to you all my colleagues, in the race in general.
As the NRM, we are defined by values. These values are hinged on the bedrock of our history.
Our history is that which the founders of NRM built on their rage and disatisfaction with the rigged elections of 1980. It is that history that warns us against a repeat of such skirnish.
Surprisingly, in every electoral cycle,we appear to have learnt nothing and forgotten nothing.
Every time we go to the polls, the voice of the people is suffocated by those whose only claim to leadership is either their stolen wealth or their connections.
Here, in Kazo, we did witness the voice of the people comming under attack by election officials allied to Minister Molly Kamukama with the urge to falsify results polled in my favour and tilting them to her favour.
To their credit, the people have come up with one voice and said no to this practice and they are prepared, more than ever before, not to just regard it as unacceptable but also to treat it as something that wont leave them sitting and watching helplessly.
Of the (10) ten SubCounties, Molly only won in Burunga SubCounty (and won after her paid agents had falsified results).
We won in:
1. Nkungu SubCounty.
5. Kanoni SubCounty.
My good sister, Ann Lumumba, won in Kazo Town Council only while my elder sister, Mrs Muheesi, won in Engari SubConty.
Overall, I came first , Mrs Jeniffer Muheesi came second and Ann Lumumba came third.
This was as early as the entire of poll returns from all the 346 polling stations in our district,by 4:00pm today.
Surprisingly, towards Midnight, efforts were already underway to steal the people’s voice and accord it to Molly Kamukama but the people as well as my other colleagues in the race said NO and declared a fullstop to this graft.
I therefore want to congraculate the NRM fraternity in Kazo district for the invaluable support they rendered to our cause.
I would like to give you my most sincere assurances that your trust is not in vain.
As we await the NRM District Elections Officer(DEO) to complete their unnecessarily delayed tallying process,i appeal for calm from our supporters.
I however want to sound a warning bell to my senior colleague in the race, Molly Kamukama, not to be tempted to steal the peoples’ choice.
To do so will be very, very, very costly to her and whoever else will be a subject of the peoples’ anger.
If by Monday, midday, next week,we shall not have heard from the NRM DEO, and obtained our results in a transparent and unaltered manner,Molly will only have herself to blame.
Let no one fault us for not forewarning them.
Lest I forget, we will be meeting Dr. Tanga Odoi on Sunday at Midday. Whoever can, please make time and attend.
I thank you.
Ronah K. Ruranga.
NRM (Flagbearer) Woman Member of Parliament, Kazo District.
