Residents of Kirinyabigo and Kawanda villages, in Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District are set to hold prayers in memory of the late Arua Municipality MP, Ibrahim Abiriga.
Abiriga was gunned down by unknown assassins on June 8, 2018 on his way back home in Kirinyabigo, which greatly shook the neighborhood to this date, according to locals.
Former Councilor Kawanda ward and community mobilizer, Casmoto Mutebi says they are organizing prayers, which will be conducted in Kaayi village at the very spot Abiriga was assassinated.
Mutebi told Chimpreports that the prayers will be preceded by a procession that will start from Kawanda trading center and end at the point where prayers will be held.
“This is going to be a peaceful event for all residents as we remember the late Abiriga who has been a friend to us all in the area including children and youth,” Mutebi said.
“Abiriga was a very generous friend to all residents and we wish to dedicate today’s Juma prayers to him; we intend to use the day to call on the authorities to name the road on which he was killed after him (Abiriga Memorial Road),” Mutebi said.
Mutebi said a number leaders in the area have been reached and invited who among others include; the RDC Wakiso district, RPC Kawempe region, DPC Kawempe, DISO Nansana Municipality, Mayor Nansana and others.
Asked if the event had been cleared by the Police as provided for in the Public Order and Management Act, Mutebi said that they informed Police and still await response.
“We did as our part as required by law and we hope Police won’t refuse us from conducting prayers; this is strictly going to be a peaceful event,” Mutebi explained.
However, Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Luke Owesigire told Chimpreports that the event has not been cleared by the police authorities.
“We have not cleared the event, although we can’t stop them from praying,” Owesigire said.
