Kawanda Residents Name Road After Fallen MP Abiriga

Residents of Kaayi village in Kawanda, Nansana Municipality- Wakiso District on Friday gathered at Kaayi Masjid Community Mosque to pray for their deceased community member and former Arua Municipality Member of Parliament (MP) Ibrahim Abiriga.

At an event organized by the community mobilizer and former Councilor, Kawanda ward, Casmoto Mutebi, the residents used opportunity to remember the assistance that Abiriga rendered to them during his life time.

These decided to name the road that connects several villages from Kawanda trading center after Abiriga Memorial Road.

It was on this road that Hon Abiriga was gunned down together with his brother on June 8th.

Amina Sijaali, the widow of Abiriga expressed gratitude to the initiative taken by the residents in the area.

“I am grateful for the occasion which is evidence that the people of the area loved him not because he was an MP, but because of the love that he also showed them,” Sijaare said.

“I am requesting government to handle the road matter seriously now, gazette its new name, and also tarmac it,” she added.

Sheikh Abas Jumba, the Imam of Kaayi mosque said Abiriga was supportive to the development of the Muslim community in the area as well as in the construction of the mosque.

“Many people lost Abiriga but we at the Mosque lost a great pillar. By the time of his death, we had talked to him to help us annex the land next to this mosque so that we expand given the increasing number of followers,” Jumba said.

“He had promised to talk to the president and we are still hoping that our call will reach the president so that we can as well construct a school which we shall name after the late Abiriga.”
