River Nyamwamba in Kasese District once again burst its banks on Sunday, cutting off Kilembe road in the area and entering people’s homes.
The Local Council chairperson for Kanyangeya in Kilembe, Mr. Deo Isemamba, said that running water from the river had again entered people’s houses and that residents were trying to put some barriers to block its movement.
The incident comes barely a month after the river and several others in the area burst their banks following days of heavy rain, displacing tens of thousands who have since been staying in camps.
Ms. Hadija Natukunda, a resident of Kanyangeya village who has been staying in the camp at Kanyangeya Primary School since May 10 but was told to leave the camp last week said that water had started entering their houses again leaving them with no option.
“Water has started entering into our houses again and we don’t know where to go now since we were told to leave the camps,” Natukunda said.
Kasese Mayor Godfrey Kabbyanga said the flooding of the river came following heavy rain in the area on Saturday night. He said that he was yet to establish the destruction on the low lands of Base Camp, Nyakasanga and Kanyangeya calling upon residents to get off far away from the river.
