The UPDF Court Martial at Hima Barracks in Kasese District has sentenced Abraham Lokwap to 35 years in prison for shooting and killing one Benon Nsimenta.
Nsimenta was a religious minister at Kogere parish in South Rwenzori Diocese.
The deceased was shot during an early morning patrol on June 24, 2020, in Kikura cell in Kasese District.
Meanwhile, the patrol squad commander Lt Talent Akampurira has been sentenced to 12 months in jail while other officers who were on patrol have been acquitted.
The UPDF spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire has said that Justice has been seen.
“The Mountain Division Court has concluded the trial in Kasese. It sentenced the patrol commander to 12 months imprisonment and the killer to 35 years. Justice has not only been done but also seen to be done,” said Karemire.
The officers stopped Nsimenta who was riding on a motorcycle with his wife to their garden and ended up shooting him at close range.
The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev Dr. Samuel Stephen Kazimba Mugalu on Sunday condemned the act and the excessive force used by security personnel.
