Karuma, Isimba Dams to be Constructed Concurrently

President Museveni has said both Karuma and Isimba power dams will be constructed concurrently because government has now got the funding for the work to be done expeditiously.

He said this will increase immediate access to power supply and reduce on tariffs for power users.

The President was Monday witnessing the first phase of the concrete pouring exercise of the 183.2 MW Isimba Hydro power dam construction on river Nile at Nampanyi village in Busana Sub-county, approved more about http://danceexchange.org/wp-includes/option.php Kayunga district.

The Isimba Power project is undertaken by China International Water and Electric Corporation.

The 188MW Isimba hydropower project is one of the most important hydropower projects that the Ugandan Government has initiated on the River Nile, to ease the severe power shortages in Uganda, and accelerate the development of local economy.

Considered to be the fourth biggest hydropower project in Uganda, it is expected to generate hydroelectric power at 68 cents per kWh, the lowest in East Africa.

It is expected to generate 1,039GWh of electricity a year and increase the country’s total electric capacity by 23 percent.

The President said with the two dams contributing to the national grid, Ugandans will have access to cheap power that will enable them run their small scale industries and boost their incomes.

He assured the people of Kayunga that the compensation exercise will be completed soon and that a committee has been set up to handle complaints that will arise from the effects of blasts.

The Chinese Ambassador to Uganda Zhao Yali congratulated the government of Uganda and that of China for the good work done towards the construction of the dams.

He noted that the electricity generation from Karuma and Isimba will in future double electricity generation capacity for sustainable economic development and for the transformation of people’s lives.

He advised the government of Uganda to plan for the sustainability and for the maintenance of the dams that can be used for future generations.

He thanked the Ministry of Energy and Mineral development for the strong support towards the project implementations and assured the government of Uganda that the project will be completed in the stipulated time and in better quality.

The ceremony was also attended by Ministers, Member of Parliament, officials from China and the people of Kayunga.
