Martin Kafanta Atukwase, the Guild President of the Kanungu based Great Lakes Regional University has been suspended by the university administration.
Dr Stanley Katungwensi, the University Vice chancellor in a letter dated 30th April 2019, says Kafanta was suspended due to the interests of security of the university.
“Management has resolved to suspend the duties of the guild president with immediate effect until he hands over office. This resolution has been arrived at in the interest of university security,” he said.
The move follows a peaceful demonstration by students on Tuesday morning in which they pretested suspension of guild elections.
Mamerito Nturanabo, the dean of students says the elections were suspended to allow time for approval of the guild constitution and for other matters concerning the student’s affairs to be addressed.
When contacted, the guild boss Kafanta said that the decision to suspend him was regrettable since he is not appointed by the Vice chancellor.
“The elections were postponed without even consulting us; I wasn’t part of the meeting that sat to resolve to suspend the elections,” he said.
