Kampala: Businessman Kabanda Accused of Assaulting Police Officers Granted Bail

Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Miriam Okello has released on bail, John Kabanda, a city businessman who is accused of causing grievous harm to three police officers who were trying to arrest him.

Kabanda is facing charges of engaging in an Act of causing grievous harm contrary to section 216 (a) of the Penal Code Act and one count of Common Nuisance.

The magistrate released him on bail after ascertaining that all the two sureties he presented were substantial and there was no doubt that he could respect all the bail terms and conditions.

Kabanda was ordered to pay 1 million shillings cash well as each of his two sureties were asked to sign a non cash bond of 10 million shillings each.

These were asked to deposit in court their original copies of National Identity cards until the matter is fully disposed off.

The case was adjourned to August 25 for mention.

Prosecution alleges that Kabanda, with others still at large, on July 29, 2020, in Nabugabo Kampala district, unlawfully wounded PC Ekip, RO Sebunya and PC Ojera Brian by stoning them as they were executing their lawful duties

It’s further alleged that Kabanda and the others were carrying placards that protested the Ministry of Health directives on mitigating the spread of the prevailing Covid-19.
