Police in Kaliro District is holding two of its officers who were involved in a night shootout that led to the death of a civilian resident.
The officers under arrest are at the rank of corporal(CPL).
According to Police, there was an incident of death by shooting of a resident in Bukamba Sub-county, Kaliro District by personnel who were responding to a rowdy life threatening situation.
This occurred on Monday night at around 10 pm at Kanabi A village in Bukamba Sub- county.
Reports indicate that officers responded to a disturbance call that came from that village where rowdy residents burnt the home of a one Julius Malasi, whom they had attacked accusing him of practicing witchcraft.
“They became so violent, burnt the houses and officers who responded started shooting to cause for the dispersal of the rowdy residents and in the process, a 41 year old Fred Nkwabe was injured and succumbed to the injuries,” said police.
Authorities later revealed that “So far two officers are in custody as we investigate the shooting but also tracking down suspects who were behind the acts of mob violence.”
“This is an act that we strongly condemn and we don’t encourage people to go about acts of criminal violence like this,” Police added.
