Mr Jacob Kafureeka, alias Jaka Jex, has been declared the winner of the hotly contested Ntungamo NRM mayoral primaries.
NRM electoral commission chairman Dr Tanga Odoi oversaw the voting on Sunday. The primaries were earlier on suspended after the candidates were accused of ferrying none residents to participate in the elections. At least over 400 were picked up by security.
Jaka Jex, who has been the incumbent, polled 2,908 votes followed by Hakim Muheki Rwomushana, the incumbent East division LC 3 chairperson with 1,195 votes and Ronald Bukenya trailed the pack with 666 votes. Ntungamo district NRM registrar Maria Mirembe declared the results on Monday.
Last week, all the three candidates were arrested and charged for ferrying of prohibited voters and doing an act that is most likely to spread an infectious disease. It is alleged that the candidates ferried more than 200 voters to Ntungamo Municipality with intent to have them participate in the NRM party primaries. The voters were ferried from the neighbouring sub-counties of Rwashamaire, Rubaare, Itojo, Rukoni and some from Sheema municipality with intention of voting for them.
Jaka Jex is the father of Ntungamo Municipality MP Gerald Karuhanga.
