The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga has handed over her Shs 20million which MPs received to fight Covid19, to the Kamuli district Taskforce.
According to information from Kamuli where Kadaga is the District woman MP, the district taskforce on Tuesday received the money from the Speaker’s team and promised to immediately put it to use to strengthen the district’s preparation and the handling of the disease.
When contacted on phone, one of the district officials who asked not to be named confirmed the development.
“It is true we were delighted on Tuesday afternoon to receive the contribution Mama got for us from Parliament,” said the official.
He added that the district is going to put the money into good use to protect the population of close to a million people in the 13 sub counties and 1,076 villages.
“I can assure you that no shilling from this money is going to be wasted on other things; all the money will serve its purpose of fighting Coronavirus,” he said.
The (Shs 10bn for Parliament to fight COVID) was contentiously passed by Parliament on April 7 2020 when a 304bn COVID-19 supplementary and additional 638bn were approved without a debate.
The motion to suspend debate was moved by Minister of State for Urban Development, Isaac Musumba.
This website brought the development to light on April 14 2020 and it later went to Kampala High Court, which ruled against the process of passing the money.
The 10bn caused tension in all the three arms of government when President Yoweri Museveni condemned it and asked the legislators to return the money. It was immediately followed by Speaker Kadaga’s threat to reveal sensitive government expenditures.
This website understands the two have had quiet engagements and decided to bury the hatchet.
