The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has consoled the families of Lake Victoria boat cruise victims that perished on water on Saturday evening.

Ms. Kadaga in a letter released on Monday, addressed to all families of the victims described the event as a tragedy.

“On behalf of the Uganda Parliament and on my own behalf, I write to express our deepest sympathy on the tragedy that befell the people of Uganda when several lives perished in a water accident on Lake Victoria on Saturday, 24th November 2018,” said Kadaga.

Over 30 bodies have been retrieved from the accident in which a boat carrying over 100 revelers capsized at Mutima beach on the side of Mukono district. 27 people were rescued while about 70 are still unaccounted for.

The Speaker offered prayers for those still fighting their lives in different hospitals and the families of the departed souls.

“At this trying time, I offer my most sincere condolences on this loss of lives. Sympathy for the trauma that the families, friends and we Ugandans are undergoing. We shall continue to pray for the families left behind and those who are still in hospital,” remarked Kadaga.

Kadaga promised a commitment by Parliament to revisit the water transport management regulations.

“I pledge the commitment by the Parliament of Uganda to expeditiously plug any loopholes in the laws that regulate the management of the water transport in our country as soon as they are presented.”
