Kabale Priest in Sex Scandal; Bishop Under Fire

The Bishop of the Diocese of Kigezi, Rev. George Bagamuhunda is facing pressure from a section of Christians, who accuse him and the Diocesan leadership for failing to crack whip on a priest implicated in a sex scandal.

In a petition dated 1st   September 2017 and signed by over 200 Christians from across the diocese to the Office of the Bishop, these want action to be taken against the embattled Rev. Edward Mwesigwa

Mwesigwa in May 2017 was dragged to police for neglecting child he allegedly fathered from his flock.

But to the shock of Christians, he was last week transferred by Bishop Bagamuhunda from Nyabirerema Archdeaconry where he was serving as an Archdeacon, to work in the Diocesan Water and Sanitation department. This was in spite of the fact that he is still being investigated by authorities.

The Christians accuse the Bishop of shielding a criminal priest because this case was brought before him the past and he took no action.

One of the petitioners Medard Byamukama from Kashenyi Church of Uganda in Bubaare Archdeaconry says a church leader with such a tainted record should not be allowed to serve in church.

When contacted by Chimpreports, Bishop Bagamuhunda acknowledged receipt of the Christians’ petition but urged them to be calm, noting that the priest could not be interdicted without following proper procedures. He said the diocesan tribunal is handling the matter.

The accused, Rev Mwesigwa on the other hand denies any wrongdoing and insists he is being witch-hunted by his enemies.

The child’s mother Winnie Ndyomugyenyi 35, a resident of Murandano cell, Butanda Sub County in Kabale district claims she had forced sex with the man of God on 24th November 2002; who was then serving as the Parish Priest of Rubaya Church of Uganda.

When she became pregnant and gave birth, she says, Mwesigwa abandoned her and declined to take care of the child, giving her only Shs. 20,000 to buy a baby shawl for the child in 2003.

Rev. Mwesigwa is not the first cleric in the Diocese of Kigezi to be implicated in similar scandals.

In May 2016, Rev. Julius Kyarikunda, the then Parish priest of Ikamiro Church of Uganda in Muko Archdeaconry was defrocked after he pleaded guilty of fathering a child out of wedlock having impregnated one Medias Akankwasa, a member of his flock in July 2013 and abandoned her with a child.

In January 2013, Rev. William Asiimwe the parish priest of Kikore Church of Uganda in Kamuganguzi Archdeaconry was arrested on allegations that he defiled a 16 year old girl who was a student at Kamuganguzi St. Jonan Luwum Secondary School in Kabale district.

In September 2007, Reverend Kenneth Byaruhanga was also defrocked for allegedly impregnating a minor.
