Derrick Katebire, the National Unity Platform Party Secretary General for Kigezi Region has been charged and granted bail by the Kabale Grade I Magistrates court over holding an illegal assembly.
Katebire was arrested along with NUP supporters in Kabale, who were celebrating the nomination of their President Robert Kyangulanyi by the Electoral Commission early this week.
Prosecution told court presided over by Magistrate Isaac Rukundo that Katebire on November 3rd 2020 while in Kabale town was involved in a negligent act likely to spread an infectious disease centrally to Section 171 of the Penal Code Act.
The suspect however pleaded not guilty and told court that the case was politically motivated.
He therefore asked to be granted bail.
The magistrate granted him a non cash bail of Ugx 1,000,000 and his two sureties John Bwogi Buyera and Ezra Azayo were each bonded at Ugx 2.000.000.
The case was adjourned to December 3rd 2020 when tit will come up for mention.
