State Minister for Tourism Hon Godfrey Kiwanda, who is campaigning to be the next Buganda Region NRM Vice chairperson had a tough weekend in Kabale, where delegates walked out of his meeting in protest.
The delegates were apparently displeased by Minister Kiwanda’s failure to give them transport facilitation.
The meeting at White Horse Inn was meant to be a joint campaign gathering organized by Hon Kiwanda, Capt. Mike Mukula (who is seeking reelection for the Eastern Region Vice Chairperson seat, and Dr Chris Baryomunsi who is eying the Western region seat.
It was attended by NRM delegates from the districts of Kabale, Rukungiri, Kisoro, Kanungu, Rubanda and Rukiga which make up the Kigezi sub region.
Trouble for Kiwanda started when Capt. Mukula told the delegates that the Shs 150,000 facilitation that he was to give them was his own money and that the other two candidates didn’t contribute to it.
But by the time he said this, Dr Baryomunsi had left the venue.
The delegates then got agitated and started demanding that Minister Kiwanda also pays them. Some started leaving the venue in protest as the minister tried to calm them down.
After several minutes, Minister Kiwanda asked those that had remained to give him their phone numbers so he could send their facilitation through mobile money.
He also promised to send them a “bigger package” after the elections on August 20th.
“Let us be patient here; Dr Baryomunsi and I are preparing something better for you after the election,” he said.
This however, angered the delegates further and they started walking out one by one.
Some were heard cursing for being “treated as children”
“This man needs to know that we are old and responsible leaders that need to be respected. He’s here telling us lies like we are young children. We are going home,” one of the delegates said.
