Police in Kabale have in detention Emmanuel Niwagaba, the Male Youth Councilor for the Northern Division of Kabale Municipality who is accused of stealing metallic cans used as trash bins in the municipality.
In August this year, Coca Cola and Global Livingstone Institute donated 200 metallic cans to Kabale Municipality to help in collecting plastic that was to be taken to the recently set up collection center.
Councilor Niwagaba was on Sunday morning arrested from his home in Kinyungusi Cell in the Northern Division by team led by the Division Chairman Isaac Mucunguzi Rushooga.
At his home, the team found 20 metallic cans that had been cut and prepared to make metallic suit cases for students.
The chairman, Mr. Arinaitwe described as “unfortunate” the fact that leaders that should be protecting public property are the ones stealing them.
He added that most of the 200 cans that were put in several places in the town have already been stolen and that only 10 remain.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police spokesman confirms the arrest of Niwagaba, who is facing theft charges under case number SD 18/28/10/2018.
Maate says Niwagaba is currently detained at Kabale central police station as investigations carry on.
